Savings and Benefits for Nonprofits Across Arizona

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the filing of more than 60 million unemployment claims across the country. As organizations begin to re-open or shift operations to safely accomplish their missions, organizations should evaluate the impact of these claims to their 2021 budget and beyond.

Arizona’s average State Unemployment Insurance (SUI) tax rates increased by over 70% after the Great Recession (2007-2009) and remained at this increased average for years after.

  • The average SUI tax cost per employee was $93 in 2009 and reached $165 by 2012.
  • The $165 per employee average remained through 2019.

  • Prior to the pandemic, Arizona experienced about a 4.5% unemployment rate.
  • Arizona’s unemployment rate at the peak unemployment reached 13.4% by April 2020.

Arizona’s Department of Employment Security more in unemployment benefits since March 2020, than it paid during the entirety of the recent Great Recession.

  • Dec ’07 – June ’09 (19 months): $929 Million
  • Mar – Nov ’20 (8 months): $1.3 Million

Nonprofit, governmental and tribal entities have the option to opt out of these costs and enroll into one of First Nonprofit’s state compliant, individually insured, cost-saving programs. Organizations in Arizona have already saved over $2 million!
