Nonprofits can add followers via Facebook

Social media arms nonprofits with an extra platform upon which they can communicate with potential givers, as well as another channel to spread the word about the organization. An infographic created by MDG Advertising revealed 98 percent of nonprofits have a presence on Facebook, 74 percent have a Twitter handle and 68 percent use YouTube. However, it's important for organizations to not expect miracles when just starting out on social media sites.

Building a following on Facebook isn't easy and it often takes a lot of time to get people to give to the nonprofit. An article for Chief Marketer stated the use of social media will get better as time goes on and donations will begin to come in if nonprofits forge on with each network. In fact, 2012 marked a strong year for nonprofits receiving donations on Facebook; here are some stats provided by the MDG Advertising infographic:

  • Individual donations were most popular on Facebook with 33 percent of nonprofits receiving at least one via Facebook
  • One in five organizations were able to bring in event fundraising {?} on Facebook
  • Seventeen percent of associations used Facebook to get donors to send money to support a specific cause

These statistics demonstrate not only that it is to attract givers on Facebook, but also that people are giving more to nonprofits as time goes on. By encouraging Facebook friends and Twitter followers to share when they donate to a nonprofit, the organization may be able to get more funding. The infographic showed 68 percent of Facebook users said they would look into an association if they saw a friend posting about it.

Testimonials

We first started using First Nonprofit’s Unemployment Savings Program when we were a small startup nonprofit.  We didn’t have an HR department and needed expertise in the event that an unemployment claim was made.  We knew we were eligible to be a reimbursing employer, but weren’t sure how to navigate that process.  They made it easy to set things up, plan for, and then manage claims when they came at a very reasonable cost. The amount of time and stress they’ve saved us dealing with all this has been worth way more than the cost.  We’ve now grown to a large nonprofit and do have an HR department but have no plans to stop using their services.  I highly recommend them to every nonprofit I come into contact with!
